Glen Scotia has announced the release of the Glen Scotia Icons of Campbeltown 14 Year Old Medium Peated Barolo Red Wine Cask Finish, a limited edition single malt whisky. This is the second release in the distillery's Icons of Campbeltown series which launched last year as a tribute to the rich heritage of the town where the distillery is located.
It was initially aged in American oak before being finished for six months in Barolo red wine casks. The result they tell me is a richly smoky whisky with notes of red candied fruits and berries, balanced by a long, dry finish and a hint of maritime salinity, characteristic of Glen Scotia’s signature style. Icons of Campbeltown: Release No. 2 is part of a five-part limited-edition annual series, inspired by the etchings on the town’s historic Market Cross—a significant meeting point for community gatherings and storytelling. The 14th-century cross features intricate stone carvings by unknown artists, depicting saints, beasts, heroes, and their adversaries, all of which tell stories of Campbeltown’s rich past. Each carving reflects the enduring spirit of the town, affectionately known as the ‘wee toon.’
