Tucked into the exquisite Knorhoek Valley north of Stellenbosch, Muratie Wine Estate, under the stewardship of Rijk Melck and his family, has been at the heart of a lot of passionate debate. The farm itself dates back to 1685 when it was granted by Governor Simon van der Stel who was Governor of the Cape of Good Hope at the time. This makes Muratie one of the oldest estates in South Africa and along with that age comes many characters and truly fascinating stories.

This exceptional red wine blend, composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (59%), Merlot (20%), Cabernet Franc (15%), and Petit Verdot (6%), is named after Ansela van de Caab, a woman with a remarkable story. Born into slavery at the Cape, she worked in the Company’s Gardens until she gained her freedom in 1695. That same year, Laurens Campher brought her to Muratie-along with their three children-making the estate their home.

Thanks to its bold structure and rich aromas, the Muratie Ansela van de Caab is the perfect companion for hearty dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with aged beef, lamb, or game. It also reaches its full potential alongside braised dishes. For a vegetarian option, it is an excellent match for roasted eggplant, mushroom risotto, or hearty lentil dishes. Aged cheeses enhance its complex notes, making it a versatile pairing wine.
