The pinnacle of the range is the Alto MPHS, a flagship release made in tribute to the estate’s previous winemakers, whose initials make up the name.
The 2011 vintage released its flagship MPHS, a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Cabernet Franc, and in the same year as its fourth winemaker, Schalk van der Westhuizen, hands over the reins of the vineyards and cellar, to his son Bertho.
Just eight barrels (2 400 litres) of this exquisite red blend were made. The vines were between 15 and 18 years old at the time of harvesting and are situated between 400 and 500 metres above sea level. This stylish, princely wine has a lively dark brick red colour and shows off abundant aromas of red berries and hints of nuttiness on the nose, as well as good intensity and subtle wood overtones,” explains Schalk. “In the mouth it is well balanced with soft grape and wood tannins together with rich, ripe fruit. It has a pleasant and lingering after taste.
The MPHS 2011 is not only excellent on its own, but also partners perfectly with lamb, steak and venison dishes, as well as casseroles, charcuterie and even mature cheeses.
