This is the second Morgenster harvest for winemaker Henry Kotzé from a dry vintage which required close monitoring of water stress levels of the vines. Winemaking was in line with Morgenster’s philosophy of finding the best possible blend of the vintage to make it a true reflection of the terroir and what could be achieved under the harvest conditions. According to Henry, the result is a wine with great depth and complexity, which he punts as outlasting 20 years.
As usual, the 2011 blend was shaped in collaboration with the Estate’s consultant winemaker, Pierre Lurton of Chateau Cheval Blanc, letting the vintage determine the blend. Morgenster Reserve 2011 contains 59% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Petit Verdot.
Morgenster Reserve 2011 was awarded 4½ stars in the 2015 John Platter Guide.
