Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon 1989, from Stellenbosch, Coastal Region, Western Cape, South Africa. A full-bodied wine with flavors of dark fruit, spices, and sometimes notes of leather and tobacco.
The Cabernet Sauvignon forms part of the 3-tiered, reds only fine offering under the Kanonkop label. Renowned for decades of ageing, Kanonkop's Cabernet Sauvignon is austere when young and ages with grace. The 1989 Cabernet Sauvignon has a ripe, fairly lactic bouquet with mocha and dark chocolate notes shrouding the core of red fruit. The palate is balanced, perhaps with a slight cork taint? A second bottle is fresher, thankfully without TCA, with more vibrant red fruit, raspberry and crushed strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy raspberry, Tayberry and a pinch of white pepper. Noticeably, quite Bordeaux-like towards the finish, with a touch of mocha on the aftertaste.
