Situated just across a narrow channel from Islay on southern end of the Hebrides, Jura has been home a distillery since 1810. While the first incarnation of the distillery closed in 1901, it reopened in 1963 and remains the sole distillery on the island of about 200 residents, according to Jura’s announcement.
Jura 10 Year Old was launched as part of a refreshed core range of whiskies from island distillery Jura in 2018, replacing Jura Origin. Aged in American white oak bourbon barrels before enjoying a finishing period in oloroso sherry butts, it has the subtle smoke and sweet fruitiness you want from a Jura single malt, with an intense kick of sherried sweetness underneath. As the number suggests, Jura 10 is aged for 10 years in American white oak, ex-bourbon barrels and finished in ex-Oloroso sherry casks – which Jura’s website calls “the perfect marriage of Highland and Island styles.”
