Morgenster, lies in the heart of the Helderberg, on the foothills of the mountains where eagles carve through the sky and owls roost in trees close to the Manor House. It’s the setting of our Bertrand family story. Long ago, an Italian man fell in love with South Africa and the Cape Winelands. In 1992, he retired from his textile career, moved to South Africa, and bought Morgenster – a farm with a rich history that dates back 300 years. That was Giulio Bertrand, founder, father and grandfather.
Made of 50% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, the 2010 Lourens River Valley opens to a frame of herbal edges with an open-knit focus. Almost a decade old now, it shows excellent control and depth of red and black fruits over red flowers with a maturing nose. Medium-bodied,, the palate is pure and balanced, with the fruit showing still tight and evolving with a balanced structure and focused tannins.
